Windborn:
Although ‘simply massive’ aren’t two words that typically describe a two piece band, they seem to suit Windborn just fine. Windborn is made up of Jeff Pike (acoustic guitar, lead vocals) and Scott Melnyk (percussion, backing vocals). The two are into making huge songs and sounds out of minimal instruments and members – basically making it sound like there are three or four people in the band when there are really only two. Jeff is originally an Alberta boy. Not the horse riding, tobacco chewing type, but the musician type. He was formerly part of Agent-O (yes, that’s an ‘oh’ sound and not a ‘zero’ sound) which ended up fizzling out due to lack of massiveness. They only wanted to play big shows with good sound and that rarely ever happened. Beckoned by the great call of the west, Jeff lifted his roots to pursue the western Canadian music scene dream. We don’t really know where Scott came into the picture, but we do know that he appeared with a self-made, modified hand percussion kit (complete with djembe, congas, kick, splash cymbal, doogie tabla, and a rainstick). Together they perform an all original blend of acoustic alternative music that can range from ambient, to edgy, or to just a simple groove. All songs are riff based, not chord based, meaning you’re more likely to have a Windborn song stuck in your head than a Nickelback song (thank God). Their full catalogue of music has now reached 3 full hours but so far they have only allowed for a six-song EP titled Radiate to be released to the masses (available on iTunes, Napster, Amazon, and emusic). The band has played every type of venue from coffee shops to music festivals all over B.C. and Alberta. Windborn looks forward to maintaining their massiveness and are currently recording a full length album that they hope to release online in the fall.
