“It doesn’t require a lot of listening to be taken in by
Laura Smith.
Her songs are colourful, stripy socks with old jeans and T-shirt. They
are as catchy as they are unassuming. You can’t help but take notice.”
Carolyn Nikodym (Edmonton Vue Weekly).
Debut album, “Sea of Stars” by North Vancouver/ Victoria artist Laura
Smith, was released on their Western Canada tour in November 2008. From
pop/alternative to jazz, folk & rock, the songs segue across a wide
spectrum of genres without sacrificing quality. With cabaret-style
accordion, walls of guitar feedback, lilting piano ballads, elated horn
sections, Laura and co-producers Andrew Braun and Derek DiFilippo have
created an eclectic album, unified by Laura's strong vocal performance.
In less than a year's time the band has undertaken two large-scale
tours of Western Canada, self-produced their debut album and garnered
rave reviews. In 2008 their shows included: NewMusicWest, Rifflandia
Festival and CBC Canada Live. Since returning from their November '08
Sea of Stars CD release tour, they have made live CBC appearances in
Vancouver and Victoria, opened for a sold out Mother Mother show in
Victoria and been selected to play Junofest 2009. Up next…a 1 month
June tour to NXNE and Toronto.
“…one can only predict that Laura Smith has an incredible future ahead
of her, not only on the Canadian music scene, but we should also be
hearing more from her on the international stage as well." -Joe
Montague (Riveting Riffs – Vancouver Plaza Club Review)
