Immediately upon introduction, the artists—Kyleanne Fleming and Theresa Slater—committed to exhibit together. The obligation to produce a new body of work was invigorating; The Habitat will be showcasing these unique fruits of their labors on August 14th.
Kyleanne Fleming is a graduate from the University of Victoria, Bachelor of Fine Arts (2007) and currently resides in Summerland, BC. Theresa Slater’s studio practice is invested in an intuitive process; with her technique of illustrative definition adding coherence to the artist’s bizarre narratives. Slater resides in the southern interior of BC, Osoyoos.
Featuring live music by

This development is a form of rupture from the linear ideals of a lot of the 20th century abstraction (Robert Youds). These works create a field of discovery for the viewer to gaze in and out of the shallow dimensions of the picture plane, with the picture never settling.
The early exploration of the 2007 series influenced the basis for the 2009 body of work. Fleming again incorporates a new ground of painting, creating a narrative for the viewer to negotiate the space of the picture. The play with light and loose form enhances the subject which seems to hold an element of invasion and decay for both nature and industrial form.
Theresa Slater Statement Under the comparative investigation of human and non-human animal experiences, coupled with the ability for incessant narrative, Theresa Slater’s paintings explore portraiture, soul character and ancestry in artist practice.
Slater’s style is in constant revolution; companion pieces from earlier series portray subjects in a light, restrained palette. Working with acrylic paint, brush quality ranges from loose and wet to onerous, dry mark making.
Subject matter includes a youth studying the death of a rabbit, a sunbathing lady with the claws of a crab and the nude portrait of the artist mother. Slater’s figures participate in the paintings, many brazen in their exhibition, sporting colourful smirks.
