Brasstronaut is a soul–live electronics-jazz band from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. They were formed in 2007. Their current line-up consists of Bryan Davies on trumpet, Edo Van Breemen on piano and vocals, Brennan Saul on drums and John Walsh on bass.
According to Jenny Charlesworth at the
Georgia Straight, "Brasstronaut binds kindred sonic spirits-The quartet’s conservatory-trained members aren’t too hifalutin to enjoy a bit of lowbrow humour. Judging by the lumbering melodies and delicate instrumentation on Brasstronaut’s one would expect the Vancouver jazz quartet to engage the Straight in a sophisticated conversation about the classical tradition—or something equally as hifalutin—when we gather on the upscale patio of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s café. The fact that the group’s vocalist and pianist, Edo Van Breemen, whips out a hilarious impersonation of Sloth, the lovable man-ogre from the ’80s teen cult hit The Goonies, puts a different spin on things entirely..."
The Dudes are a Canadian indie rock band, formed in 1996 in Calgary, Alberta. Dan Vacon is The Dudes' major creative force in the band. The group also includes guitarist Bob Quaschnick, drummer Scott Ross and newest member and bassist Brady Kirchner.
Critics have likened their musical style to Modest Mouse, although band members cite their influences as The Flaming Lips, The Descendents, Joel Plaskett, Thrush Hermit and Weezer.
The Dudes gained popularity in Calgary both for their lo-fi approach to recording and releasing albums and for their live stage-show. On their album, Brain Heart Guitar, they worked with Calgary producer Russ Broom, and released the album in 2006 on the LoadMusic record label.
Their music has been played on major Canadian music stations, university radio and CBC Radio 3, and the group has played at North by Northeast, COCA and Canadian Music Week. They have toured throughout Canada, Europe and the United States.
Their song "Dropkick Queen of the Weekend" was heard across Canada in 2006, having been featured in a Rogers Wireless advertising campaign.
In June 2009 their latest album, Blood Guts Bruises Cuts was released in Canada.
