Last Sunday night an impressive crowd full of turkey and good cheer assembled at the Habitat. They were greatly rewarded with awesome music. The Valentimes got us excited and tappin' our toes with their incredible energy and skilled string strumming. A local Kelowna band whose members have played in other local bands such as Alpha Baby and Cry of the Afflicted, the Valentimes were greeted with friendly faces and enthusiastic cheer. Our headliners, The Acorn, showed typical Ottawa diplomacy, wry humour, and all of us a really good time. Their musical mastery really comes out on stage, and they are fascinating to watch. They beautifully harmonize an alarming plethora of instruments, to the ear’s delight. Jaws dropped as the guitarist played a guitar, and what looked to my untrained eye like a ukulele at once. Self proclaimed inspirations include high-school bullies, love, and the periodic table check them out http://www.myspace.com/theacorn, their album is also available on iTunes.
Food donations were collected at the door, all in all it was an evening full of love and inspiring art.
Monday continued in the spirit of thanks and giving, in a quieter fashion. The Habitat hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for their neighbours, the Gospel Mission. Local volunteers of all ages and walks of life contributed and brought toothbrushes and info on poverty and resources in town.
