In 2010, we started to charge $2 for our Open Mic Wednesdays and naturally this has been met with mixed response. We get it, times are tough, and who wants to pay more money for more things? Here's a quick rundown on why we'd even consider doing something so dirty and tricky behind your backs...

Burgeoning Local Talent:
We are looking to have hosts for our Open Mic's, every night if we can manage it. There are so many gifted and talented artists in the community, and they all have bills to pay. Grabbing a little coin at the beginning of the night means we can help them out a little bit and they can feel like they're supported in their community (which they obvs-tots are).

On the Topic of Bills:
Wednesdays can be quiet nights. While they have been pretty great lately, there are nights we lose money. Believe me, we aren't as rich and glamorous as the tabloids will have you believe, and we're definitely not rolling around nudie in your hard-earned toonies while laughing at you. Despite how great it sounds, this would only succeed in making us rather dirty and smell bad. The coinage that doesn't go to the artist helps us break even and pay ourselves a little bit. If we can't pay our bills, we can't stay open and that would mean no more Habitat. Sad face.

Here are some of the comments floating around on the subject:

"Charging two dollar for Open Mic.....that's pretty skid."

"People complaining about $2 is pretty skid! I'm sick & tired of people and their attitudes of entitlement!"

"More metal shows."

As you can see, the opinions are as wide and varied as the individuals who show up to Habitat every week.

Hopefully y'all understand. It's still less than a Starbucks/Bean Scene coffee, and it lasts longer. Unless you take 12 hours to drink your coffee like I do.

See you next Wednesday?
