Kelowna may be boring, but there are diamonds in every rough. This month gives K-town a few interesting events to look forward to.
First off there are three huge names to get out of the way; Lenny
Kravitz (who looks his best as I first saw him, wearing only a python
and his guitar) starts the Love Revolution November 3rd, The Kenny Ray
Rogers kicks it old school on the 18th of November, both at Prospera
Place. David Usher (who had silver finger nails last I saw him live) is
touring his new album Wake up and Say Goodbye, he’ll be playing at
Flashbacks on November 6th.
Also playing on November 6th is Bend Sinister. They play the Habitat,
with their new album Stories of Brothers, Tales of Lovers. Bend
Sinister is mix of progressive indie rock who self-categorizes as “a
band so refreshingly original that the struggle to categorize them is a
losing battle.” Slow Down Molasses, a six piece consisting of members
& ex-members of some of Saskatoon’s finest bands who play dreamy
indie folk music, will introduce them.
A couple of days earlier on the 4th of November Jason Collett brings us
his Dylan-esque drawl via the Habitat. Collett grew up in the suburbs of
Toronto before moving to the city to pursue music. He will be playing
with Rock Plaza Central and Zeus he brings us his fourth album, Here’s
to Being Here.
The World Music and Dance Festival will be held on November 7th at the
Rutland centennial hall. An unforgettable night-Flamenco, Balkan,
Gypsy, Middle Eastern, Afro, Latin, Indian. Also featuring Flamenco
dancer and bellydancers. This evening is a must to experience,
especially if you’re into something a little different and can’t really
afford to travel on that student budget. Delicious
Lebanese-Mediterranean food, bar, entertainment and dance all night.
Don’t miss a plethora of UBC and OC staff and students as they join to
raise money for writing scholarships at both institutions. WOR(l)D
RUCKUS is a pay what you can event held on Saturday November 15th from
4pm to 1am featuring rad readings and free stuff.
